Hi folks, I’m Jon Mullen the Energy Evangelist. Why Are You Wasting Your Time Driving? This month we’re looking at savings on electric vehicles, and today we’re asking how we can claw back wasted time while driving.
A few weeks ago I went on a bit of a trip with the family. I ended up driving 5 hours that day. We were going out for the day and a lot of it was going to be driving as fast as possible on the motorway, but I also knew that there were too many sets of roadwork. I was driving a Nissan Leaf, and at the end of the day I was sitting thinking with a mug of coffee. I realised I was much more rested (it felt as if I had only driven a couple of hours that day) when I compared this to driving our older petrol car which has basic cruise control, and I wondered why. In the Nissan Leaf the cruise control also detects the car in front and adjusts my speed so I don’t have to continually think about braking or accelerating or changing gears even when you are driving through roadworks. So the car is doing the thinking for me.
I know this is also available on petrol or diesel cars, but another car maker Tesla is taking this a lot further.
In the latest Tesla’s the car is also able to do the steering on the motorway, and you can even allow the car to automatically overtake. This means that when I’m travelling for business, most of which is motorway travel, then you have time to think and work things out in your brain while letting the car make the constant little changes getting you from A to B. Personally I want this on my next car because motorways suck the energy out of me and I want it back.
