How can we see what is happening inside our businesses?
I’m Jon Mullen the Energy Evangelist and we’re talking about #SaveEnergySaveMoney.
This process is very like having financial management reports, and so many people really hate doing the numbers! But if you find a good accountant they can show you through diagrams and reports how good, or how badly, your business is performing over a period of time. So most management reporting is down to the presenter and how they want to help you, as a director of your company, to understand what is happening inside your business.
It is exactly the same with energy and resources within your company. In the past you received a monthly invoice from your electric, gas or water provider. Many times this is marked as an estimated reading (unless you have a half hourly or smart meter), and this is a complete waste of time as it doesn’t give you any insight apart from letting you work out your annual consumption.
What we really want to do is see how you are using your resources on a half hourly basis, and this is where your half hourly meter (or the modern equivalent is a smart meter) comes into play. This helps you to see what is happening in fine detail and may reveal some surprising habits or unknown working practices.
Once we are able to have a full year of data we will use this as a baseline to compare against. This will allow us to make the right decisions for your business to reduce usage and wastage across your operations. If you can see the detail then you can ask the right questions, and show how you are changing and progressing.
