BeMS 101 – Internal Or External Management?

Should you pay for someone else to monitor and manage your energy systems to save you money?

I’m Jon Mullen the Energy Evangelist and we’re talking about #SaveEnergySaveMoney.

Ok, let’s start with a simple question – Do you feel that you have the knowledge to tune a car so that it runs smoothly in all situations. If you don’t have this type of knowledge and ability or experience to analyse, then I believe you will struggle with any medium to large heating system. It’s just not the same as your house heating system where you are using one or two rooms in a house and you decide it’s a bit on the cold side, so you switch up the thermostat. Modern heating systems which are managed through a Building Energy Management System can be made up of multiple systems which are monitoring and managing the following elements:-

– The boiler

– Individual heating pumps – there may be many for different sections / buildings

– Multiple thermostats for different areas of the buildings

– Multiple motion sensors for different areas of the buildings

– Outside thermometers.

– Air conditioning both for comfort and cold storage.

And this is just management of the heating system. A complex BeMS can manage Heating Ventilation and Air Con, domestic hot water, electrical supply and distribution, energy consumption, lift systems, and more. So unless you have a very simple system I would advise you to have an ongoing maintenance contract to make sure that your BeMS is operating at optimal levels throughout the year. This means you will #SaveEnergySaveMoney each and every day.

But that’s enough info for today.
