Be Part Of The Solution 101 – Start

How do I start my Race To Zero Carbon?

I’m Jon Mullen the Energy Evangelist and we’re talking about #SaveEnergySaveMoney.

Today I’m talking about reforming our businesses to reduce the losses and maximise the profits. I’m approaching this from an energy perspective initially, but it works right throughout your business because we all collect data and use this as business intelligence to make the right decisions.

So where is the Starting Line?

1. Are we actually going to put our money where our mouth is and pledge, or become accountable, that we are going to make changes in our businesses? The UK government wants us to set a target of reducing our carbon generation in each business by 50% before 2030. This should not be a problem for 90% of businesses, but actually this is a low target – so the question is will we actually bother to implement it in the short term? I have an example of a business that has cut their carbon reduction by 100% in 16 months. And now this company is more profitable and focussed for the future. Maybe it’s better to change quickly and change the culture of the business for the better.

2. Make a Plan: The first 12 months will be the most important to gain momentum. You need to document what actions will be taken toward achieving both interim and longer-term pledges, especially in the short- to medium-term. You will need a tool to record your process. I can help you find the right tools to make the job easy, AND use it as a sales tool for your business. Many larger organisations have environmental management certification, but many of these are paper accreditations and very little progress has been made. You can write all you want, but if you don’t step forward and implement what is the point? Please step forward and act as soon as possible.
